  • Day 1 - 27 July: Akureyri & Hveravellir

After breakfast at the hotels, we will depart from Húsavík and pick up participants from Mývatn and Laugar on our way to Akureyri. Akureyri is often referred to as the Capital of the North, and it is a vibrant town full of charm and culture. We will take a short sightseeing drive and then allow for some free time for you to explore in the city center.

Around noon, we will head south along the ring road until we reach Blanda River. We'll pass the Bland hydro-power station and get a view of the large artificial lakes. Further on, we'll hopefully get views of the Hofsjökull and Langjökull glaciers. When we reach Hveravellir geothermal area, we will have our lunch break and take some time to walk around the hot springs, or take a quick dip in the geothermal pool by the mountain hut.

We will then continue driving to Geysir geothermal area, where we will end our day with dinner at the Hotel Geysir.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

  • Day 2 - 28 July: Geysir - Gullfoss - Thingvellir National Park

Today we get the chance to explore the famous Golden Circle of Iceland. After breakfast, we'll take some time to walk around the Geysir geothermal area and wait for Strokkur - the most active of the geysers - to spout a column of water up 20-25 meters in the air. This happens regularly, approximately every 5-10 minutes.

Then we will backtrack a bit to Gullfoss, where you can take the time to enjoy the sight of the stunning waterfall and the gorge of the Hvítá river into which the waterfall cascades. From there, we will continue towards Selfoss and Hveragerði, a small town that is built above a geothermal field. There is a possibility in Hveragerði for a short hike along the hot spring.

The final destination of the day is Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park. Thingvellir is known as the birthplace of the Icelandic nation, and it is where Viking chieftains established the first assembly in 930 AD - the earliest known version of a formal parliamentary system in the world. The park also contains unique geology and natural landscapes, and visitors can observe what is known as the continental drift, where the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates are drifting apart.

From Thingvellir we will continue towards Reykjavík where we will stay for two nights at Hotel Cabin. At the hotel this evening, we will enjoy a buffet dinner that includes a variety of hot and cold dishes, freshly baked bread, and select beverages: soft drinks, water, coffee, and tea.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

  • Day 3 - 29 July: Reykjavík City Tour

Today is your chance to explore Reykjavík. We will embark on a three-hour tour where you will learn all about the capital of Iceland. First, we'll drive all the way to the outskirts of the city to the Álftanes peninsula, where we will stop at a church. Just a short distance away lies Bessastaðir, the official residence of the Icelandic president. On our way back into the city, we'll stop at Perlan - one of the best view points over the city that is built on top of hot water reservoirs. If the weather is clear, we can see all the way to the distant Snæfellsjökull glacier.

Back in the town center, we will head for the Hallgrímskirkja church, one of the city's best-known landmarks. There is a possibility for another viewpoint here from the church tower. Then, we will walk from the church through the city center, down to the Laugavegur shopping street, and finally to the Harpa Cultural Center by the old harbour. Along the way, listen to your guide for historical and cultural stories about this fascinating island.

At the end of the day we will return to the hotel. The afternoon is free for you to explore the city at your leisure.
